LEGO Minifigure Maker Tools: What Each One Actually Makes

"Minifigure maker" is a search term covering four unrelated kinds of software. One group ships plastic. One group produces CAD files and building instructions. One turns your photo into an image. One is a print shop with a web form.

People land on the wrong group constantly, spend an hour learning an interface, and discover it can't do the thing they came for. Sorting by output rather than by name fixes that.

Group A: LEGO's own tools

Minifigure Factory: LEGO's official customiser, online and at flagship stores. You pick parts from their catalogue and design the front and back torso graphic in their editor using shapes, colours, and text. They build it and post it. Around $11.99 online, currently one per household.

Good at: a genuine figure, real parts, arrives in a box. Can't do: your face. Heads come from a preset list. There's no photo upload.

Create a Minifigure (Pick and Build): the in-store wall where you assemble three figures from bins of loose parts. No customisation beyond part choice, and no printing. Cheap and fun with a kid; irrelevant if you wanted a likeness.

Group B: brick design software

BrickLink Studio: free desktop CAD for LEGO. Full parts library, physics-aware building, automatic step-by-step instructions, and a direct line into BrickLink's marketplace so you can price and order the parts for anything you design. It is the strongest tool in this article by a wide margin, and it renders well too.

Mecabricks: browser-based, no install, gentler to learn than Studio, and its renderer produces images that pass for photographs of real builds.

Good at: designing anything you can build from real parts, generating instructions, photoreal renders of scenes. Can't do: turn a photo into a face. You're still choosing from catalogue heads. Both tools are free, which makes them worth learning anyway if you build.

Group C: AI photo generators

Upload a photo, get back a minifigure image that resembles you. The crowded category. Named tools you'll encounter: BrickifyMe, Magic Hour, MiniFigureAI, Homiwork, Pokecut, Pippit, EaseMate, PicTools, and EditThisPic.

They differ less than their marketing suggests. Most run a similar pipeline: read the photo, describe the person, generate a minifigure image from that description. The differences that actually affect you are output size, whether there's a watermark, whether you need an account, and how many free attempts you get before a paywall. I wrote up what each kind of "free" costs you because the answer varies more than the images do.

Good at: speed, cost, likeness of the things that read at a glance, batches of people. Can't do: ship you anything. Reproduce a face precisely. Print text or fine detail from your clothing.

Answer one question first: do you want a file or an object?

If it's a file, you're in Group C, unless you specifically want a part-accurate render of a build you designed, in which case Group B.

If it's an object, you're in Group A or D. Group A if genuine parts and a fair price matter more than the face. Group D if the face is the point and you can wait.
